What Is a Postpartum Doula?

A postpartum doula is a trained professional who provides nonmedical physical, emotional, and informational support to parents and families after a baby's birth.

Unlike a medical provider, a postpartum doula does not diagnose or treat medical conditions. Instead, a postpartum doula offers practical help, education, reassurance, and individualized support as families adjust to life with a newborn.

At Stateline Birth Keepers, we recognize that postpartum needs look different for every family. Some parents need help navigating newborn care and feeding. Others need someone to listen, help them find moments of rest, or offer reassurance as they adjust to their new responsibilities.

Our approach centers the well-being of the parent while supporting the family's transition into this new season of life.

Caring for a newborn comes with a learning curve, even if you've cared for babies before. Our postpartum doulas offer nonmedical education and practical guidance to help you feel more comfortable with common newborn care tasks.

Topics may include:

  • Understanding newborn cues and behaviors.

  • Diapering, dressing, soothing, and settling your baby.

  • Safe sleep practices and creating a safe sleep environment.

  • Understanding normal newborn feeding patterns and when to seek additional help.

  • Learning about newborn care resources and when to contact your baby's healthcare provider.

  • Building confidence as you learn what works for your family.

Our goal is to help you develop confidence and access reliable information without judgment or pressure.

Newborn Care, Education & Confidence
Rest, Recovery & Care for the Parent

A new baby changes family routines, relationships, and responsibilities. Partners may be learning how to share caregiving duties, and older siblings may need time and reassurance as they adjust to their new role.

Our postpartum doulas can offer education, encouragement, and practical suggestions to help families navigate these changes. We support your family in finding rhythms that work for you, while keeping the recovering parent's needs and well-being in view.

What's Included in Our Postpartum Doula Support?

The postpartum period can bring a wide range of emotions. You may feel deeply connected to your baby one moment and overwhelmed, uncertain, or exhausted the next.

Your postpartum doula provides a compassionate, nonjudgmental space to talk about your experiences, concerns, and changing needs. We can help you identify helpful resources, discuss strategies for navigating daily challenges, and offer reassurance as you build confidence in your new role.

You don't have to pretend everything is easy, and you don't have to navigate every change alone.

Emotional Support & Adjustment to Parenthood

Your body and mind need time to recover after birth. Yet many parents find themselves putting their own needs aside while caring for everyone else.

Postpartum doula support encourages you to make room for rest, nourishment, hydration, and practical assistance. Depending on your individual needs and the services included in your package, we can help you identify ways to make your home environment more supportive, organize daily priorities, and find opportunities to rest while your baby is safely cared for.

We also recognize that recovery looks different after vaginal birth and cesarean birth. We encourage you to follow your medical provider's guidance and seek medical attention for symptoms that concern you.

Feeding Education & Support

Every family's feeding journey is unique. Whether you plan to breastfeed, chestfeed, pump, use formula, combination feed, or are still deciding what will work best, you deserve compassionate, practical support.

Our postpartum doulas can offer general feeding education, help you identify questions to ask, and connect you with appropriate resources when additional support is needed. When specialized lactation care is needed, we can help you explore options for working with a qualified lactation professional.

We respect your feeding decisions and believe families deserve information and support without shame.

Frequently Asked Questions About Postpartum Doula Services

Do you offer daytime and overnight postpartum care?

Yes! We offer daytime postpartum care, overnight care, and extended postpartum support. Every family has different needs, so we work with you to discuss the type of care you're looking for and determine a support arrangement that fits your family.

How many hours of postpartum support can I receive?

There is no universal time limit for postpartum support. The amount and type of care depend on your family's individual needs and the arrangement we discuss together. Whether you're looking for occasional help or more extended support, contact us to explore your options.

Can I hire a postpartum doula even if I didn't have a birth doula?

Absolutely! You can reach out about postpartum doula services even if you didn't use our birth doula services. We'd love to discuss your family's needs and how we may be able to support you.

Every postpartum journey is different, and the support you need may depend on your birth experience, recovery, feeding goals, and family circumstances.

Our postpartum doulas support families following vaginal births, cesarean births, inductions, medicated and unmedicated births, and unexpected changes in birth plans.

We also recognize that some families enter the postpartum period after a difficult or traumatic birth, pregnancy complications, or a stay in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). These experiences can bring additional questions, emotions, and adjustments.

We offer compassionate, nonjudgmental support and can help you identify appropriate resources when more specialized medical or mental health care is needed.

You do not have to experience a particular type of birth or recovery to deserve postpartum support

When you're caring for a newborn, even basic tasks can feel overwhelming. Having someone help with practical needs can make the transition into parenthood feel more manageable.

Our postpartum package can include nourishing meals during postpartum visits. Depending on the agreed-upon services, postpartum doula support may also include assistance with simple household tasks related to your recovery and baby care, helping you prioritize your needs and make space for rest.

We believe caring for a family includes recognizing the needs of the person doing the caregiving.
